Is it normal to cry after Hypnotherapy?

This is a great question and the simplest answer is yes!

Hypnosis (at its basic core) is becoming aware of one’s self, a deep look inward. When we focus on ourselves we can have finally found the answer(s) to what we seek, a resolution!

It is natural to feel some emotion during/after a hypnosis session (an abundance of emotion is called abreaction – for more details please read previous posts). Many will feel a sense of emotional release during a session, especially with regression. It is years of emotional baggage being released in a relatively short period. Others may laugh or feel anger.

During a hypnotic session the unconscious mind absorbs a ton of new information, it is the unpacking process (which usually happens 1 or 2 days after the session) when emotions are brought to the forefront. This is more apparent when the client speaks with loved ones about the session, or when they are triggered.

I call this the “Aha!” moment, an emotional breakthrough and the realization of what has caused them to feel held down, held back from becoming the person they are meant to be. This is the highest point of emotional release, it is the moment of awareness.

Is everyone emotional during hypnosis?

No!

We are all different and so is our emotional state. I’ve seen clients show little or no emotions (disassortative) during a session. Being disassociated during a session is not a bad thing, and is sometimes necessary and beneficial to treatment.

In closing, yes showing emotion(s) during and after a session is normal. It is the Hypnotists duty (morally and ethically) to educate the client of any possible side effects.
