Can Hypnotherapy be harmful?
There are situations where hypnosis can be harmful. These issues may arise when the Hypnotist does not complete an intake form properly, the client fails to mention any issues or the client simply is not aware.
The Hypnotist must always complete an intake form to properly assess the client’s needs and requirements. Failing to do so places the client at risk during a hypnotic session. Any client that has a history of hallucinations, delusions, or any other mental disorder must not be placed under hypnosis.
Some may say that if their Physician approves then it’s okay. I find the risk too great and will not proceed, the risks greatly outweigh the reward for the client.
The Hypnotist must also ensure the client is not under the influence of alcohol or narcotics (prescribed or otherwise). This can be accomplished by asking in advance, observing behaviour, and knowing the client.
What is abreaction?
An abreaction is a hypnotic condition where the client believes they are reliving a moment (usually traumatic) with a physical and emotional response.
This may seem scary to some, but with proper guidance, the client is back in a calm state. The truth is you cannot relive the past – only revisit, observe and report.
It is the responsibility of the Hypnotist to set up the client for complete success and guide them through the entire process. Not doing so is a dis-service to those we heal.
In conclusion,
Please ensure, to be honest with the Hypnotist, answer the intake form to the best of your knowledge and never show up to your appointment under the influence of alcohol or narcotics.
